NBA betting: head to head, line and totals, and why overtime decides so many bets

Basketball cannot end in a draw, so every NBA game that is level after four quarters goes to overtime. That one rule decides head to head, line and total points bets. Here is how, with the season dates.

Key facts

  • NBA games are four 12-minute quarters; a tie after the fourth goes to five-minute overtime periods until there is a winner.
  • Under the TAB's Victorian rules, results include extra time unless you are told otherwise, so overtime points count for head to head, line and totals.
  • A line at $1.91 on both sides adds up to 104.71%; you need to win 52.36% of those bets to break even.
  • The 2026-27 NBA regular season opens on 20 October 2026 (US time) and ends on 11 April 2027, with 82 games per team.
  • The NBL27 season started on 19 September 2026.

How NBA betting works

NBA betting is placing a fixed odds bet on an NBA game, a player or a season with a licensed Australian bookmaker before tip-off. Basketball has no draws: the NBA rule book says all regulation periods are 12 minutes, and if the score is tied at the end of the fourth period, play resumes after a 2:30 break with five-minute overtime periods until there is a winner. That rule, more than any other, shapes how basketball bets settle. The settlement rules quoted below are from the TAB's published Victorian sports betting rules; every bookmaker publishes its own.

NBA betting markets

MarketWhat you are betting onOvertime counts?

The overtime column comes from rule 10.8 of the TAB's Victorian rules: final results take into account extra time unless the bookmaker said otherwise when you bet. Basketball cannot finish level, so a two-way head to head always has a winner.

Head to head prices

A game priced at $1.40 and $3.00 implies 71.43% and 33.33%, a total of 104.76%. In our calculation the fair prices are about $1.47 and $3.14, and a balanced book keeps 4.55%. The implied probability calculator shows this for any game.

$1.40 returns $14 for every $10. To make money at that price over many bets, the favourite has to win more than 71.43% of the time.

Line betting on the NBA

Line betting evens up a game with a clear favourite. Suppose the line is home -6.5 at $1.91 and away +6.5 at $1.91.

Final scoreHome -6.5Away +6.5
Home wins by 10WinsLoses
Home wins by 7WinsLoses
Home wins by 6LosesWins
Away winsLosesWins

Both sides add up to 104.71%. To break even at $1.91 you must win 52.36% of your line bets, which is the hidden cost of a market that looks like a coin toss.

Totals and the overtime trap

Total points is where overtime matters most. Say the total is 224.5 and the game is 112-112 at the end of the fourth quarter. On a regulation-only count that is 224 points and the under wins. But overtime counts unless the market says otherwise, and five more minutes of basketball adds points for both sides. A game that was heading under at the final siren can finish well over.

Read the market title. "Total points" and "total points (regulation)" are different bets, and our guide to over under betting covers how bookmakers set the number.

Player props

Player markets ask whether a player goes over or under a line for points, rebounds, assists or a combination. They are prop bets, priced individually, and every one carries its own margin. Check the void rule for a player who does not take the court, and remember that overtime minutes add to a player's numbers unless the market says otherwise.

Postponed and abandoned games

Basketball has its own settlement rule, separate from the general one. Under the TAB's Victorian rules:

  • A basketball game postponed by 24 hours or more before it starts is void, and bets are refunded. For most other sports the threshold is 72 hours.
  • If a game is interrupted after it starts and does not resume within 24 hours of the scheduled time and finish within 48 hours, undecided bets are refunded.
  • If an official result is declared within 24 hours of the start, result bets are settled on it.

The NBA and NBL seasons

The NBA's 2026-27 regular season opens on Tuesday 20 October 2026, US time, and ends on Sunday 11 April 2027. Each team plays 82 games. The NBA Cup championship game is on Friday 11 December (US time) at Hinkle Fieldhouse in Indianapolis, and a six-game Play-In Tournament decides the seventh and eighth seeds in each conference before the playoffs.

Closer to home, the NBL27 season tipped off on Saturday 19 September 2026, with the first two rounds played over nine straight days. Basketball betting on the NBL uses the same market types, and the same basketball settlement rules apply.

NBA betting and Australian law

Bet only with a bookmaker licensed in an Australian state or territory, and only before the game starts if you bet online. ACMA describes in-play betting on sports matches as prohibited with limited exceptions, and the phone exception applies only when the selection, bet type, amount and confirmation are all given wholly by phone. Licensed wagering providers cannot take credit cards or crypto for deposits.

Pundit tip: on totals, ask what overtime does to your bet before you place it. An over bet is quietly helped by overtime and an under bet is quietly hurt, and the price does not always tell you.

NFL games can end in a tie, which changes the head to head maths; see our NFL betting guide. For decimal prices from scratch, read how to read odds, and every bet type is in our bet types guide.

Frequently asked questions

Does overtime count in NBA betting?

Usually yes. Under the TAB's Victorian sports rules, final results include extra time unless the bookmaker says otherwise when you bet. That covers head to head, line and total points. Some markets, such as fourth quarter or regulation-time bets, are settled before overtime by definition.

How does line betting work on the NBA?

The favourite gives up points and the outsider gets them. At -6.5, the favourite must win by 7 or more. Lines use half points, so one side always covers.

What does over 224.5 mean in basketball betting?

The combined score of both teams, including any overtime unless the market says otherwise, must be 225 or more for an over bet to win. 224 or less wins the under.

Can I bet on NBA games live in Australia?

Not online. Online in-play betting on sport is prohibited in Australia, so app and website bets close at the tip-off. The only exception is a bet placed wholly by phone.

Is basketball betting on the NBL the same as the NBA?

The markets are the same kind: head to head, line, totals and player props, and a bookmaker's basketball settlement rules apply to both. The seasons differ: the NBL27 season started in September 2026, a month before the NBA's.
