Live dealer casinos Australia: how they work, the house edge and the legal catch

Live dealer games put a real croupier on your screen, streamed from a studio overseas. Here is how they work, what each bet costs by the maths, and why bonuses usually do not cover them.

Key facts

  • Online casino games, live dealer tables included, cannot legally be offered to people in Australia. Every live casino taking Australians is offshore.
  • Live tables are streamed from studios. Game maker Evolution says it runs over 2,000 live tables, with studios in places such as Riga, Malta and Tbilisi.
  • House edge by bet: European roulette 2.70%, American roulette 5.26%, baccarat banker 1.06%, player 1.24%, tie at 8 to 1 14.36%.
  • At our partners, live dealer games cannot be played with an active bonus at all.
  • An example hour of 60 rounds at $10 costs about $16 on European roulette and $6 on baccarat banker, on average.

Live dealer casinos and Australian law

Live dealer casino games are not legal to offer online to people in Australia. ACMA lists casino-style games such as poker, blackjack and roulette among the services that are illegal when provided online here, and a live table is exactly that game, streamed. So every live casino that accepts Australian players is an offshore site, with no Australian licence and no Australian complaints body. The details are in are online pokies legal in Australia.

How live dealer games work

A live dealer game is a real table, a real dealer and real cards or a real wheel, filmed in a studio and streamed to your screen. You place bets through an on-screen layout, and the result happens on camera. Our guides to live roulette, live blackjack and live baccarat cover how each streamed table works; the roulette and baccarat pages also price the speed formats.

The stream usually comes from a game maker rather than from the casino itself. Evolution, which says it builds its studios in-house, runs over 2,000 live tables, and its locations page names studios in Riga in Latvia, in Malta and in Tbilisi in Georgia. Its licence list covers jurisdictions in Europe, Africa, the Caribbean, Canada, the United States and South America, with Evolution Gaming Malta Limited licensed by the Malta Gaming Authority. Australia is not on it. The casino showing the game is a separate business with its own terms.

What each live bet costs: the house edge

The house edge is the share of every bet the game keeps on average. We worked these out ourselves: roulette from the number of pockets, baccarat by counting every hand from an eight-deck shoe under standard drawing rules.

Game and betPayoutHouse edge
European roulette, any standard betFixed odds, one zero2.70% (1 in 37)
American roulette, any standard betFixed odds, zero and double zero5.26% (2 in 38)
Baccarat, bankerEven money less 5% commission1.06%
Baccarat, playerEven money1.24%
Baccarat, tie8 to 114.36%

Blackjack has no single figure: the edge depends on the table's rules and on how you play. Our blackjack strategy guide covers that, and the roulette odds guide explains every roulette bet. Game shows such as Crazy Time and MONOPOLY Live are wheels with bonus rounds rather than table games; our live casino game shows guide explains how the wheels and multipliers work.

What an hour at a live table costs

Live rounds are slower than pokie spins, which helps. Example pace, not a measured one: 60 rounds an hour at $10 a round is $600 bet in an hour. The average cost is that times the house edge:

BetHouse edgeAverage cost of $600 in bets
Baccarat banker1.06%$6.35
Baccarat player1.24%$7.41
European roulette2.70%$16.22
American roulette5.26%$31.58
Baccarat tie14.36%$86.16

The table makes the case for avoiding side bets such as the baccarat tie: the same hour costs more than ten times as much as the banker bet. For how a baccarat hand is dealt, see how to play baccarat. For a simpler game with one card each, see dragon tiger, where the tie rule decides the price.

Pundit tip: pick the table by its rules before its limits. A single-zero wheel instead of a double-zero one roughly halves the cost of every spin.

Live casino and bonuses

Live tables and bonuses rarely mix. Our partners' general bonus terms say live dealer games, table games and jackpots are not available while a bonus is active. Roulette counts only 5% towards wagering, and live dealer roulette is excluded from even that. If you mainly play live games, a welcome bonus does nothing for you, and accepting one can lock your balance away from the tables you came for. Our casino bonuses guide has the full rules.

Withdrawal limits at table stakes

Table players tend to bet bigger, which puts withdrawal caps in play sooner. At Wild Tokyo's entry level the cap is AUD 800 a day and AUD 13,000 a month, with no more than three withdrawal requests open at once. A $2,000 night at a live table is paid over three days; a $15,000 one takes more than a month. Mino Casino's entry level is AUD 900 a day and AUD 18,000 a month.

Live casino advice on Reddit and forums

Forum threads are a mix of real experience, guesswork and promotion. A post cannot show you the terms you will be bound by, and some posters earn from links. Use them for questions to ask, then check the answers yourself:

  1. Search the casino on ACMA's blocked gambling websites list.
  2. Read the bonus terms for live game exclusions.
  3. Read the withdrawal limits and verification rules.
  4. Check the game provider's name in the live lobby.

Red flags at live casinos

  • A "live" game with no named provider, or one that looks animated rather than filmed.
  • No stated rule for what happens to your bet if the stream drops. Read the game rules screen before you play.
  • Table limits far above the casino's withdrawal limits.

Frequently asked questions

Are live dealer casinos legal in Australia?

No. The Interactive Gambling Act prohibits casino-style games such as roulette, blackjack and poker being offered online to people in Australia, and live dealer games are casino games streamed online. Sites that offer them to Australians are offshore and unlicensed here.

Are live dealer games rigged?

The cards and wheels are physical and shown on camera, which is the point of live play. What you cannot check from home is the operator: Evolution, for example, lists licences in Europe, the Americas and Africa, but none in Australia, and the casino showing the stream is a separate business.

Which live casino game has the lowest house edge?

Of the simple bets, baccarat banker at about 1.06% after the 5% commission, then baccarat player at about 1.24%. European roulette is 2.70% on every standard bet. Blackjack can be lower with good rules and basic strategy, but it depends on the table.

Can I use a casino bonus on live dealer games?

Not at our partners. Wild Tokyo's and Mino Casino's bonus terms say live dealer games, table games and jackpots are not available while a bonus is active, and roulette bets count only 5% towards wagering, with live roulette excluded.

Is live casino advice on Reddit reliable?

Treat it as anecdotes. Forum posts cannot show you a casino's terms, limits or licence, and some posters have links to promote. Check the same things you would anywhere: ACMA's blocked list, the operator's terms and its withdrawal limits.
