Paroli betting system: riding wins, with the real odds of a streak

The Paroli doubles after wins instead of losses, so the big bets only ever risk winnings. It is the gentlest system on your bankroll, yet it still loses 2.70% per dollar. Here is how the streaks really fall.

Three chip stacks growing after wins with an arrow looping back to the start, explaining the Paroli system

Key facts

  • The Paroli betting system doubles your bet after each win and resets after a loss or after a set number of wins in a row, usually three.
  • With a three-win target, every losing run costs exactly one base bet and every completed run collects seven. At $5, that is -$5 or +$35.
  • Three reds in a row on a single zero wheel comes up 11.51% of the time, about 1 run in 8.7. In our calculation 8.7% of players go 20 runs without collecting once.
  • With $100 of $5 bets, the chance of reaching +$100 before going broke is 35.8% in our calculation.
  • An uncapped reverse Martingale, letting every win ride, ends every run exactly one base bet down. The cap is what makes the Paroli playable.

How the Paroli betting system works

The Paroli betting system is a positive progression: you raise your bet after wins and fall back after losses, the mirror image of loss-chasing systems. The standard version:

  1. Bet one unit on an even-money chance, such as red.
  2. Win: let the stake and winnings ride, so the next bet is double.
  3. After three wins in a row, collect and go back to one unit.
  4. Lose at any point: go back to one unit.

Because each larger bet is made from winnings already on the table, your own money at risk in any run is one unit. That is the real advantage, and it is about risk, not about winning.

6$5Loss+$25Reset
7$5Win+$30Double
8$10Win+$40Double
9$20Loss+$20Reset

Spin 9 is the moment Paroli players dread: two wins in, a $20 bet, and it loses. But look at the running total. Before the run started you had +$25, and after it you have +$20. Every failed run, however far it got, costs exactly one base bet. Every completed run collects 1 + 2 + 4 = 7 units, or $35.

The odds of each target

You can stop after any number of wins. Here is what each choice gives on a single zero wheel, in our calculation:

Wins to collectYou collectChance per runAbout 1 run inAverage result per runAverage staked per run
1 (flat betting)1 unit48.65%2.1-0.027 units1.00 units

415 units5.60%17.9-0.104 units3.84 units
531 units2.72%36.7-0.128 units4.74 units

Divide the last two columns and you get minus 2.70% on every row. A longer target pays more when it lands and lands less often, in exactly the proportion that keeps the house edge intact.

How long the dry spells last

With a three-win target you collect about once in every 8.7 runs, but streaks do not arrive on schedule.

Runs in a row without collectingChance
1029.4%
208.7%
302.5%

Twenty failed runs at $5 cost $100 while you wait for a three-win streak that is no more likely on run 21 than it was on run 1. Each spin is independent; the VGCCC states it plainly: what happened before does not affect what happens next. A streak is not "due" and a hot run does not make the next win likelier, which is the trap explained in our gamblers fallacy guide.

Will you double your money?

Think of each run as a step: down one unit with probability 88.49%, up seven units with probability 11.51%. We worked out exactly how often you reach a profit target before losing your bankroll:

Bankroll ($5 units)TargetReach the target first
$50+$5039.3%
$100+$10035.8%
$250+$25022.8%
$100+$25013.7%

The bigger the stakes relative to your unit, the longer you play, and the more the edge decides the result. Over 100 spins at $5 our simulation of 200,000 sessions finished ahead 38.4% of the time, with a middle result of -$25 and an average of -$22.81. The worst 5% lost $180 or more. Over 300 spins, 33.1% finished ahead.

Pundit tip: the Paroli's strength is that you know your worst run in advance: one base bet. Combine it with a session loss limit in base bets, say 20, and you know your worst night too.

The reverse Martingale, uncapped

The reverse Martingale is the Paroli without the cap: you let every win ride until you lose. The arithmetic is brutal and simple. Since everything you have won is always on the table, the run only ends on a loss, and when it does you have lost your original unit. Every uncapped run finishes exactly one base bet down, however long the streak was. The cap is the only thing that turns winnings into money you keep.

The Paroli is the only one where a single run cannot hurt you badly, which is a genuine plus for your bankroll if not for your expected result. Compare the doubling-after-losses version in our Martingale calculator.

Frequently asked questions

How does the Paroli betting system work?

Bet one unit on an even-money chance. After a win, double the bet by letting your stake and winnings ride. After three wins in a row, take the profit and go back to one unit. After any loss, go back to one unit.

Is the Paroli the same as a reverse Martingale?

It is a reverse Martingale with a stopping point. A pure reverse Martingale keeps doubling after every win, so every run ends with a loss of exactly one base bet. The Paroli banks the profit after a set number of wins.

What are the odds of hitting three wins in a row?

On red with a single zero wheel, (18/37) cubed, which is 11.51% or about 1 run in 8.7, in our calculation. On a double zero wheel it is 10.63%.

Is the Paroli safer than the Martingale?

Yes in the sense that you never risk more than one base bet of your own money per run, so no single run can wipe out your bankroll. No in the sense of value: both lose 2.70% of the total bet on a single zero wheel.

What is the best Paroli target?

There is no best one. Two wins collects 3 units 23.67% of the time, three wins collects 7 units 11.51% of the time, and five wins collects 31 units 2.72% of the time. Every target costs 2.70% of the amount bet.
